11 x 14 inches, framed to 17 x 20 inches – $600
After touring the Moravian Tile Works and hearing how the craftsmen and craftswomen are creating tiles with the same tools and techniques that Henry Mercer used in the early 1900s, I chose to depict one of those craftsmen at work. “Clay Has a Memory” was repeated and brought home the idea that although tile making is very tactile the craftsman uses very specific steps, so the clay is not overworked. The craftspeople at the Moravian Tile Works are creating beautiful pieces for homes and installations today keeping alive the arts and crafts movement of Henry Mercer’s time.
