I am an abstract, experimental artist and I paint intuitively – meaning that I paint with no preconceived outcomes in mind. I grew up in Alabama, earning a BA in Studio Art and Art History at the University of Alabama Birmingham (UAB), and have traveled to many areas of the world. These global experiences have shaped my art on many levels, the most important influence is that of the varied forms within Japanese art and culture. I now live in Doylestown, PA, yet continue to explore global methods which challenge my aesthetic.
This work, entitled Joy, is a work on polystyrene rather than on canvas, a technique learned from Filippo Rossi, Florence Lecturer on Studio Art and Museology, Stanford University, Florence, Italy. I created a deeply textured substrate with the polystyrene which provided a challenging base for gold leaf application. This was part of my experimentation – applying traditional methods of gold leaf application to new substrates and unconventional textures. Even though the painting is large in size, it is very light weight and easy to manage given the nature of the polystyrene.
