SUMMARY:Francisco Silva - This Looks Familiar
DESCRIPTION:About the Artist: \nFrancisco Silva was born in Lima\, Peru. When he was three his family immigrated to the United States settling in New Jersey where he was raised. Encouraged by his parents\, he began drawing at an early age. While attending Parsons School of Design he studied composition\, color and oil painting as well as graphic design. After graduating\, he continued oil painting and exhibited in various group shows at that time. \nFrancisco started working as a graphic designer at an art magazine that took up much of his time and eventually stopped painting. His profession turned from graphic design\, to web design\, and finally to web development. January 2019 marked his return to painting after many years of absence. He began with landscapes inspired by his backpacking trips on the Appalachian Trail. \nCurrently\, his work has grown to include themes portraying the struggles of the everyday person. His influences include Edward Hopper and the Social Realist painters of the 1920s and 1930s. The rich textiles of his Peruvian roots are reflected in his use of vibrant color and his brushwork is a combination of loose\, painterly strokes and controlled detail.

Court St\, Doylestown  \nFive wonderful writers read selections from their work followed by a relaxed discussion and light refreshments in Freeman Hall. Free to attend\, parking is available on site. \nMEET THE WRITERS:  \nJulie Cooper-Fratrik is a former Bucks County Poet Laureate with her MFA from Goddard/VT College\, winner of an Achievement Grant in Poetry from Leeway Foundation in Philadelphia\, and former Creative Fellow at the Psychiatric Center of Philadelphia. Julie is currently working on a manuscript of shorter contemplative poems with an unidentified speaker or speakers. \nDante del Vecchio is a poet\, artist\, and musician from Bucks County\, PA.  Born in a car on the Garden State Parkway\, and originally from Long Beach Island\, NJ\, Dante believes his early childhood (in a then unspoiled and undeveloped environment) led to a lifelong love of beauty and nature. Besides performing solo\, Dante belongs to the band\, Great Blue Buddha. He writes in a variety of styles and attributes his experience as a poet to a smooth transition to songwriting.   \nJennifer Nelson is a writer and teacher living in Bucks County. Last fall\, her book Teaching with Heart: Lessons Learned in a Classroom was published. She runs Your Stories\, a writing services company. She studied journalism at Columbia University and creative writing at Vermont College of Fine Arts. She’s a graduate of the University of California\, Berkeley.   \nDavid R. Roth’s debut novel\, The Femme Fatale Hypothesis\, was released by Regal House Publishing in November 2021. It was an INDIE Book of the Year finalist and won International Book Awards’ Best Literary Fiction. Driftwood Press has twice selected his stories as quarter-finalists in their Adrift Short Story Contest. Athe the event he will be reading from his second novel set in the fictional Pennsylvania river town of Marrsville\, The Gift of Death.   \nTara Tamburello is the current Poet Laureate of Bucks County and a past winner of the Bucks County Short Fiction Contest. Her writing has appeared in Ghost City Review\, Bone Parade\, Rust + Moth\, Menacing Hedge\, and other journals and anthologies. DESCRIPTION:Wordsmith Poetry Series at Bucks County Community College at Tyler Hall 142. \nPatricia Smith and Hayden Saunier\, Poetry Reading. \nSince the 1960s\, Bucks County Community College’s Wordsmiths Reading Series has featured some of the most distinguished and admired poets of our times.  \nAs the founder and leader of the renowned Wordsmiths series\, Bucks County Community College has distinguished itself among Philadelphia-area colleges and universities\, and has become the home of a vibrant community of writers\, poetry lovers\, and supporters of the arts. Wordsmiths readings are always widely attended. Guest writers are often paired with inspiring local ones\, and the audience is typically made up of a lively mix of students\, faculty\, and the community at-large. The series gives students the opportunity to connect what they learn in the classroom with the wider world by attending high caliber free readings on their own campus. Simply put\, the series places Bucks County Community College at the center of the region’s literary life.

SUMMARY:“Skull Sessions” Group Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Bucks County and Philadelphia regions are home to a vibrant multitude of artist run spaces and cultural collectives. From realism to narrative installation\, the artworks in the exhibition “Skull Sessions” represent a current survey of the range of genres in which artists amongst their art group peers are currently practicing. \nThe title of the exhibition takes its name from the strategy building sessions that are more typically associated with athletics-especially football. In “Skull Sessions”\, the art will speak for the artist with ideas shared and communicated to the viewers as if they are players on a united team. Abueva (New Hope\, PA) is author of Boy Wander – A Coming of Age Memoir (Rattling Good Yarns Press) and recipient of the Lambda Literary J. Michael Samuel Prize. Credits: The New York Times\, The Philadelphia Inquirer\, et al. He is also a global marketer at ETS. jobertabueva.net \nBill Hemmig’s first short story collection\, Americana: Stories was recently published by Read Furiously\, which also published his novella\, Brethren Hollow\, and two of his stories in its Life in the Garden State anthologies.  He has been published in\, among others\, The Madison Review\, Philadelphia Stories\, and BarBar. \nDr. Tom Mallouk is a psychotherapist/writer who just completed his tenure as Bucks County poet laureate. He’s the curator of Poet’s Corner in the Bucks County Herald. He is the author of two chapbooks of poetry\, most recently The Write Metaphor\, and his creative nonfiction has been featured in Solstice Literary Magazine and Narrative. \nFilipina-American Anna Maria Manalo is an author of paranormal suspense memoirs and anthologies. She specializes in hauntings brought about by catastrophic events such as WWII\, acts of human violence\, odd and strange entities that appear in remote\, isolated or abandoned places\, or beings created by human thought called Tulpas. \nMacmillan published Judith McNally’s first novel\, Jigsaw\, in 1981. The New Federal Theatre\, NYC\, optioned her Charlie Parker play\, Birdland\, and the NJ State Council on the Arts awarded her a Top Priority Prose Fellowship before that. Now she most enjoys writing short\, comic dialogues\, a.k.a. “micro-logues!”  \nMargaret Montet’s narratives of place feature music\, memoir\, and culture. Also a college librarian\, she holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction\, and presents multimedia music-centered lectures at lifelong learning venues. Her creative nonfiction has been published in many journals and anthologies. Margaret’s first collection of travel essays is Nerd Traveler.  \nJennifer Nelson is a writer and teacher living in Middletown Township. She runs Your Stories\, a writing services company. She earned graduate degrees in journalism from Columbia University and creative writing from Vermont College of Fine Arts. Her bachelor’s degree is from the University of California\, Berkeley. \nDavid. R. Roth is the author of the INDIES and International Book Award-winning novel The Femme Fatale Hypothesis. His short fiction has appeared in Moss.\, Passager Journal\, Writers Write\, among others. Driftwood Press has twice named him a quarter-finalist in its Adrift Short Story Contest. \nLinda C. Wisniewski is a former librarian and journalist living in Doylestown. She teaches memoir writing and volunteers at the Pearl Buck House\, and is the author of a memoir\, Off Kilter and a novel\, Where the Stork Flies. DESCRIPTION:Join us on October 25 from 6:30-7:30pm and learn more about the impact of Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia in our community. A speaker from the Alzheimers Association will offer a brief discussion on warning signs and risk factors\, healthy habits\, the differences between Alzheimer’s Disease and dementia\, the impact on families and caregivers\, and the importance of early detection. We are also joined by sisters Constance and Bernadette McBride\, of the Arts Council of Bucks County\, who will discuss the art and poetry they created as they helped their mother wrestle with Alzheimer’s Disease. \nTheir exhibit\, The Lonely Girls\, can be viewed at the library until January\, 2024.

DESCRIPTION:SPECIAL EVENT: 50 Years of John & Peter’s: Stories\, Songs\, Sparkle & Spirit\n\nFriday\, October 13\, 2023\n7:00 PM  9:30 PM\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \nJohn & Peter’s\, a bar that boasts over 50 years of continuous music\, remains the eye of the hurricane in New Hope\, as gentrification swirls around it. The original John and Peter’s preserved the integrity of the bar by selling it five years ago to some of their dedicated employees\, so the beat goes on. \nAuthor Amy Yates Wuelfing embarked upon this labor of love with Joan Arkuszewski and Loren Hunt. Crafted through hundreds of hours of interviews and archival research\, this comprehensive oral history lays out the narrative of a small\, charming dive of a bar that has persevered through the decades by providing the local community with entertainment and a sense of belonging.

Two poetry collections\, The Earth Claims Her and Hear Her Voice\, were recently published\, respectively\, by Plan B Press and Kelsay Books. Choirs and soloists have sung her commissioned pieces\, including River Song\, featured in the world premiere of I Rise: Women in Song at Lehigh University and performed in numerous national and international locations.
