SUMMARY:The Price of Silence: The Forgotten Story of NJ’s Enslaved People plus Discussion
DESCRIPTION:The Price of Silence: The Forgotten Story of NJ’s Enslaved People plus Discussion\nSaturday\, January 14\, 2023\n4:00 PM 6:00 PM\nFor more information and tickets: https://www.acmescreeningroom.org/now-playing/mlk\nNew Jersey\, the Garden State\, is known for its produce\, but not for the enslaved people who tilled the soil. In this two-part PBS documentary\, descendants and historians tell their stories and why it was the last northern state to end the institution of slavery. Part one offers an overview of the state’s history of enslaved people and shared poignant family stories of its earliest freed slaves. In episode two\, we look at the Lost Souls Project\, which is working to remember and identify African Americans who were forcibly removed from New Jersey and taken to Louisiana and explore the lasting impact of slavery in the state. The book “If These Stones Could Talk” was Ridgeley Hutchinson’s inspiration for making the film. We will be joined for a Discussion with Filmmaker Ridgeley Hutchinson along with co-authors Beverly Mills and Elaine Buck (If These Stones Could Talk).

SUMMARY:Jean Burdick: Raking Light | Reception Jan 19 | Exhibition runs through March 15
DESCRIPTION:“Raking Light” Reception and Artist Remarks\nJanuary 19\, 6-8pm\nExhibition runs through March 15 \nAs summer turns to fall\, the angle of the sun’s rays becomes more acute and the shadows they cast grow more pronounced. This new light alters which details are accentuated or recede. In Raking Light\, the interplay of light and shadow features prominently in the works of the four artists on view. Through distinct processes\, these artists encourage a renewed examination of our surroundings to discover hidden details\, patterns\, and meaning in the everyday.  \nA&C Member Jean Burdick has 20 paintings and prints in the exhibit.  \nPlease reach out to megan@inliquid.com to join in on the reception or with any inquiries. Guests are also welcome during business hours\, Monday-Friday\, 10 am – 4:30 pm\, and by appointment. \nThe Yard Philadelphia is located at 21 S 11th St Philadelphia\, PA. \nFeatured Image: Jean Burdick\, “ Morning Haze” \n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n\n  \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Artist Talk with Helen Rebekah Garber
DESCRIPTION:Since 2012\, Helen Rebekah Garber has incorporated her science and nursing experiences into her art. As a way to cope with the stress\, trauma and uncertainty that came with working with patients during the pandemic\, Garber transferred daily calculations onto her paintings which are on view in the exhibition\, “Code Number Safe [Un]Safe” in the Hicks Art Center Gallery. For her Artist Talk\, Helen will reveal tactics she employs in both her artist and nursing practices while striving for homeostasis- a state of equilibrium “where art and life converge\, nourish\, and reimagine one another.” Helen will be in attendance and the talk will be on Zoom also at the following link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/82012541962

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Code Number Safe [Un]Safe Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:All are invited to join attending artists\, the curator\, and Bucks students to celebrate the opening of the exhibition\, Code Number Safe [Un]Safe.\nThe premise of the exhibition “Code Number Safe [Un]Safe” is built around the concept of numbers and numeric systems holding values for safety and stability or on the contrary- impermanence and oppression. The cohort of artists participating in the exhibition use numbers and numeric identifiers to describe personal\, process and historical narratives through sculpture\, painting\, collage\, or visual diagrams/images that symbolize spaces for realized well-being or vessels of conflict.

SUMMARY:Lord\, Write My Name
DESCRIPTION:Nationally-recognized baritone vocalist\, Keith Spencer\, and award-winning composer and arranger\, Peter Hilliard\, team up once again after their critically-acclaimed collaboration\, Brothers on Broadway\, to present Lord\, Write My Name – A Gospel and African American Experience in Spirituals\n.\nLord\, Write My Name is an inspirational musical tapestry of African American Spirituals interspersed with narratives\, poetry\, and letters penned by enslaved\, emancipated\, and iconic Black people throughout history. This educational presentation explores themes of mourning expressed through Spirituals countered by the powerful and redemptive story of the Gospel message. \nIn this masterful collection of song and word\, Spencer\, accompanied by Hilliard on piano\, performs well-known Spirituals such as “Go Down\, Moses\,” “Walk Together Children\,” “Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho\,” “Steal Away\,” and several others brilliantly reimagined and arranged by Hilliard. \nThis beautiful and uplifting concert shares themes of social justice\, identity\, and the hope that connects us all.

SUMMARY:Pride Weekend Special Event: Queerying Nature
DESCRIPTION:Pride Weekend Special Event: Queerying Nature\nSunday\, May 21\, 2023\n3:00 – 5:00 PM\nIn the animal world\, sexuality and gender are diverse. In other words: being queer is natural. There are thousands of cases of homosexual birds\, transgender fish\, non-binary animals\, polyamorous families… So what happened? Has our outlook changed? Queerying nature intertwines the words of Vinciane Despret\, philosopher\, Camille Pier and Gwen Seemel\, artists\, and biologists and ethologists to explode the idea of a sexual or gender norm. Nature is much more queer than us! Partly filmed in Lambertville\, NJ and featuring local artist Gwenn Seemel\, join us for a post screening QnA with Gwenn.
