Bronze Age

Mixed media

  • 15.5 x 20 inches, unframed, 2″ deep cradled canvas with finished sides – $1600

The colors and textures in this piece remind me of natural elements — copper, bronze, marble, slate, wood, and straw. It’s a palette that’s always been one of my favorites. The simple geometric shapes suggest the labor of artisans working with these natural materials. The two together represent the ideal of harmony between nature and craft, and my vision of humanity applying our skills and knowledge to use wisely the resources of nature.

This piece is worked mainly in paper collage, with light accents added in acrylic paint. The papers are taken from magazine pages that call out to me as I browse for appealing swaths of color and texture. I de-acidify and buffer them before using them in a collage and seal the finished work with a UVLS polymer varnish. The sides of the canvas are finished with neutral gray acrylic paint.
