TOBIAS BARRERA -
Pencil Drawings and Story Telling
March 3 - April1, 2011
Mr. Barrera has been “drawing stories “for as long as he can remember and at age 8, he was asked by his teacher to draw a picture on the black board of Columbus arriving to the Americas. The teacher found the drawing so amazing, she did not erase it from the black board but entered the picture in a school competition and Tobias won first prize.A couple of years later , he again won a price for carving the face of Marco Polo in a white rock. When other students took notes during class, Tobias would make drawings on his note paper depicting what he heard during the lectures. He did not use written words. His father enrolled him in art school in Rio Pierdas but Tobias did not last very long as he did not want his teachers to tell or even suggest to him what to paint or draw, he had his own ideas and decided art school was not for him.He continues to draw the images he sees in his mind and much of what he puts down on the drawing pad depicts events, celebrations, everyday life and experiences mostly from his childhood Puerto Rico.
